Grand Knights’ Report

May 2003

Greetings Brothers,

Our Council suffered greatly recently with the passing of two of our brothers, Sir Knights Carlos Castelazo and Dennis Miller.  This month will mark the first anniversary of the death of my father, Rev. Peter Thompson.  With that loss still fresh in my heart, I know that all of the families in our council join me in praying that Judy Miller, Carlos Castelazo Jr. and all the surviving loved ones of our fallen brothers be comforted in the peace of Jesus.  May Carlos and Dennis rest in His peace.  We have all been blessed to share in the joy of their service to our Lord.

Many thank-yous are in order so I will have to make them short and sweet.  Our Council was very busy this Lent and Easter!  Three major events were undertaken during that time and they were all hugely successful.

So many people were involved that I will limit my thanks here to the Chairmen.  I hope they submit separate reports this month to this newsletter and take care of the specific names.

PGK Al Liddicoat chaired the Lenten Soup Dinners.  Many Knights joined with the other ministries of St Jude parish providing reverence, fellowship and charitable donations for the needy.  I do not have the exact figure in front of me but I know the proceeds were over $1000.  Great Work!

Our DGK David Griffin organized our first annual 3 on 3 basketball tournament, titled “Hoop-D-Do”.  This also raised well over $1000 and will allow the basketball team at St Jude School to finally purchase uniforms.  That’s a Slam Dunk!

On top of all that, our council joined forces with Newbury Park Council #8397 to provide volunteers to run the all the registration tables and introduce the speakers for the entire Conejo Catholic University series.  I Co-Chaired that event with DGK Barry Harper of Council #8397.  I will submit a separate report about it later in the newsletter.

Thanks to all who volunteered their time and financial support to make these events so successful.

Vivat Jesus!

Seth Wegher-Thompson, GK

Conejo Catholic University

This Catholic Adult Education program spearheaded by Father Dave Heney, Pastor at St. Paschal Baylon Church in Thousand Oaks, offered over 50 seminars and workshops connecting faith with real life during the season of Lent. The Knights of Columbus from Westlake Village and Newbury Park joined forces to run the registration tables introduce the speakers and handle the cash.  Our councils deployed over 50 volunteers to cover over 100 timeslots.  Way over 2000 people attended and were enriched by the materials presented.

Here is a list of the volunteers from our council.  Newbury Park council has a list at least as long as this one.

I was particularly moved to see the great enthusiasm and participation of so many of the women of our council.  What can be more rewarding than working side by side with our family in service of our Lord while being enriched with knowledge and understanding?  I just can’t say enough about this program and I hope the Knights continue to support its growth and expansion.

Seth Wegher-Thompson, Co-Chair, Volunteer Committee.
